I was going to post this christmas eve - but somehow just realized I must have 'saved' the post vs. posting.. So here it is:
So the other night James noticed a few tiny spots of blood in our rabbits litter.
Rosemary, the bunny, is only 10 or so months old, so ideally, this rabbit shouldn’t be unhealthy. Having one rabbit that had previously died of uterine cancer (which we learned she had because of tiny blood spots in her litter) I felt a little panicked. Rosemary is a very friendly bun, well house trained and extremely playful with Lolo.
Despite how comfortable Rosie is with our family, she has never been keen on being picked up in any way. Rabbits don’t like heights generally speaking, so this is not a sign of mistreatment, just that we never needed to pick her up much anyways as she has almost free roam of the house, and returns to her cage herself to do her business.
So I swaddled Rosemary tight in a towel to give her some sense security and I flipped her over to examine her itty bitty bunny bits. Everything was unremarkable (no blood etc) except for one – or should I say two – things.
Rosemary was sporting a cute bunny size set of ‘nads’. I had been told by the pet store Rosemary was a female. Clearly this was not the case.
How do I explain to our toddler that her bunny is a grape smuggling boy? I would like to tell her (rather than just continuing to call him ‘her’. I am just not sure how to do so. She is still oblivious to the differences between girl parts and boy parts.
Also we need a new name! Going to have to give that one some thought – again.

Since this post was written we have explained to Lolo that we made a mistake and suggested that because Rosemary is a boy and not a girl - we could call her Jack instead.
Somehow we missed explaining that you are either boy or you are girl. Because now each day she wakes up and depending on her mood that day, she will say Rosie/Jack is either a boy or a girl... and use one or the other name and will expect us to do the same. I don't think this is a bad thing really.... I know she will figure it out in her own time!
