Today is day three of toilet training with Lolo. She is the one that is two and a half and I can’t say I have any more of an idea how to do this than she does. So here how I have been winging… I mean….doing it:
1. Rolled up my carpets on day one.
2. Explained that the couch is now off limits.
3. Explained to Lolo that Diapers are only for sleeping and naptime now soon.
4. Started with half days so that Mommy… I mean… Lolo doesn’t get overwhelmed.
5. Reward her with a couple Gummy Bears each time she is successful.
Day 1 - in our 4 hour period of potty training:
Floor: 2
Toilet: 0
Day 2 – in our 5 hour period of potty training:
Floor: 0
Toilet : 3
Day 3 (today) :
Lolo went the entire day without a diaper with exception to:
- The one hour period after we woke up because not being a morning person is clearly genetic (in my opinion), and we both suffer from a classic case of the morning grouchies.
- Nap time.
- Two hours of wind down time before bed so we could cuddle on the couch together.
There were no accidents today either.
Overall I would say she is learning quite quickly.
We only have one issue.
She will not poop in the toilet. She has a hang up about this. My mother in law is convinced that it is because she believes that the poop is part of her body falling out and doesn’t want to let it go, (yet Lolo loves to dump a poop from her diaper in the toilet and flush it away). I can't decide if I think this is totally rediculous or completely plausible. So I am at a loss.
Any words of wisdom before she explodes????

I have heard that this is not an unusual stance for a child. I'm sure you can find lots online to help her and you transition through it. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a potty chair? Try that.....
ReplyDeleteThanks Leann, I will do some reading.
ReplyDeleteShe doesnt want to use her potty, she likes using the toilet 'like mommy and daddy'. We bought her a little pink cushy seat insert for the toilet so the seat isn't too big for her bum.
She didn't poop yesterday at all, not even a poop in her diaper when she woke up today....
Someone got Raisin Bran for breakfast. Good thing she likes it.
After 3 kids, you'd think I'd be an expert. Not...at least according to my mother-in-law who always tells me and my sister-in-law that HER two boys were trained by age-effing-two (yeah, no bitterness on my part there).
ReplyDeleteMy kids trained with the pee thing early, but not the poo thing. I worried about it with my first initially (because I'm not on schedule with the books) then just said whatever. They were all trained by four and that worked just fine for me and our family.
Okay, well all my potty-trained kids just walked through the door. Good luck!
I used to do day care. It's totally normal - most kids are pee trained before they're poop trained. Some moms teach the kid to tell them "I need a diaper so I can poop" and just let them do it that way for awhile. At some point, the kid gets tired of the squishy feeling and voluntary poops in the pot. Another technique that works for some kids is offering some kind of reward for pooping in the pot. Like if she's really into clothes, she gets to wear cute little princess panties if she does it. Always let her know she's in control of her own poop - you already know you can't make her do something she doesn't want to do so she gets to decide where the poop goes. "Do you want to poop in your diaper or poop in the potty like mom and dad?" Whichever answer she gives is okay (for now). Good luck!
